It looks like one step forward, two steps back for Edge of Tomorrow 2. We reported in October of last year that the script for the sci-fi sequel had been completed, which meant, hopefully, that the project could move forward. However, it looks like director Doug Liman and the creative team are heading back to the drawing board, as star Emily Blunt reveals they’re currently working on an entirely new script for the movie. No doubt, that’s going to delay things a bit.
Emily Blunt is currently promoting her new horror/thriller A Quiet Place, which has been getting rave reviews ever since its debut at this year’s SXSW in Austin, Texas, and is also discussing Mary Poppins Returns. During a recent interview, she was asked about the status of Edge of Tomorrow 2, which may end up being titled Live Die Repeat and Repeat, but that could change. Her response makes it clear the team still wants the movie to happen, but they’re heading in the wrong direction for those who want to see it happen sooner rather than later. Here’s what she had to say about it.

“Doug Liman has got an awesome idea and he’s excited and they just need to write it. There has been a script, but now I gather there’s another one in the works.”
One of the biggest issues in getting Edge of Tomorrow 2 made is scheduling. Tom Cruise is a very busy man and Doug Liman is an in-demand director. Not to mention Christopher McQuarrie, who wrote the first Edge of Tomorrow and just wrapped up directing Cruise in Mission: Impossible – Fallout. What’s truly heartbreaking for fans to hear is that Cruise asked Emily Blunt if she could do the Edge of Tomorrow sequel before she shot Mary Poppins Returns. Unfortunately, because of her commitments there, it simply couldn’t happen.
“It’s a lot for all the stars to align for everyone to be free at the same time and available to do it at the same time. They asked me to do [it] two months before I started ‘Mary Poppins.’ Tom was like, ‘Can you go this autumn?’ and I was like, ‘No, I can’t go, I’m playing Mary Poppins for like a year, dude! I can’t do ‘Edge of Tomorrow.'”
Edge of Tomorrow had a troubled marketing campaign, but wound up surprising a lot of people when it was released in 2014. The movie only made $370.5 million at the worldwide box office, but it’s a movie many have discovered since and that’s apparently led Warner Bros. to believe a sequel is worth doing. But Doug Liman and everyone involved have also made it clear this is only happening because it’s something of a passion project. So, at the very least, they still seem passionate about getting it made, but it just doesn’t seem to be coming together in the near future like we had hoped.
